Appointment of new Deputy Chief Magistrate

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath has appointed a new Deputy Chief Magistrate in Queensland.

The Attorney-General said Janelle Brassington’s extensive experience in regional areas will be a valuable asset in her new role.

“Ms Brassington has more than 25 years in the legal profession, much of it in regional Queensland,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Our new Deputy Chief Magistrate has a long and varied legal career, including roles with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

“During her time with the ODPP Ms Brassington served as an administrative officer, a legal officer and a prosecutor.

“She also drafted the ODPP’s procedures for the implementation of the Criminal Offence Victim Act 1995 and a manual for ODPP lawyers to help them prepare prosecution briefs of evidence.

“At the Department of Justice and Attorney-General, Ms Brassington was involved in the development of policy and legislation.

“She was appointed a Magistrate in 2005 and has served in Southport, Innisfail and most recently has been the Regional Coordinating Magistrate in Cairns.

“Ms Brassington was born in Charleville and grew up in Mount Isa. Before she came to the law she was a registered nurse.

She fills the second Deputy Chief Magistrate role that Terry Gardiner left when he was appointed as Chief Magistrate.
