The Governor-General has appointed Mr Nicholas Broadbent SC as the Associate Director of Public Prosecutions (Cth) under s 18A of the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1983 (Cth) for a 5-year term.
Mr Broadbent is currently a Deputy Senior Public Defender at the NSW Public Defenders Chambers, having previously served as a Public Defender from 2020 to 2025. Mr Broadbent was appointed Senior Counsel in 2024 and practised as a barrister at Maurice Byers Chambers from 2009 to 2019. Mr Broadbent holds a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University, and a Master of Laws from Harvard University. He has also held leadership roles within the legal profession, including as a Councillor and former Honorary Secretary of the Council of the NSW Bar Association.
The role of Associate Director is statutory and is being filled to further support the growing and complex work of the CDPP’s criminal legal practice.
