Arrest following investigation into dangerous riding in Hills

A man has been arrested following an investigation into dangerous riding across the Adelaide Hills.

It will be alleged that over the past 12 months, a motorcyclist evaded police on numerous occasions while travelling through the Nairne and Kanmantoo areas, reaching speeds in excess of 180 km/h. Due to safety concerns, the Yamaha motorcycle was not pursued on each occasion, and Hills Fleurieu Highway Patrol initiated an investigation into the rider’s behaviour.

At about 3.15pm on Monday 15 June, police sighted the motorcycle and rider on Mine Road, Kanmantoo, allegedly travelling at 150 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The motorcycle was not pursued.

Officers subsequently attended a home at Callington, where the alleged rider was arrested. Police seized an action camera fitted to the motorcycle, along with several sets of number plates. A review of the footage allegedly captured several additional offences.

The 30-year-old man from Brukunga was charged with numerous offences, including multiple counts of driving dangerously to escape police and driving at an extreme speed, as well as driving with unassigned number plates and failing to wear a motorcycle helmet.

He was issued with a 12-month instant loss of licence and bailed to appear in the Mount Barker Magistrates Court on 23 September.

“This kind of riding is reckless and puts lives at risk,” said Senior Sergeant First Class George Gasiorowski, Highway Patrol Coordinator.

“Police will continue to investigate and take action against anyone who chooses to evade police or treat our roads like a racetrack.”

The Yamaha motorcycle was impounded for 28 days, and police intend to apply for its forfeiture during court proceedings.
