Arrest of correctional services employee at Mobilong, South Australia

A Murray Bridge man was arrested yesterday for offences relating to possessing a prohibited item in a correctional institution buffer zone.

On Thursday 17 June, a 42-year-old man from Murray Bridge was arrested by SAPOL’s Police Corrections Team.

The man was a Department of Correctional Services employee, who was found by police in possession of a prohibited item within a correctional institution buffer zone.

Police then searched the man’s home address resulting in the seizure of a firearm and a small amount of cannabis.

The man was charged with possessing a prohibited item within a correctional institution buffer zone, and offences relating to the possession of the firearm. He has also received a fine for possessing cannabis. He will face the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court on Monday 2 August.

The man is the first person to be charged under legislation introduced on Thursday 3 June, regulating offences committed within a correctional institution buffer zone. The maximum penalty for this offence is five years imprisonment.
