Northern Territory Police have apprehended 5 youths in relation to a stolen motor vehicle overnight.
At 10pm, police received a report of a stolen motor vehicle from a property in Araluen. The vehicle was sighted on multiple occasions driving erratically in the Alice Springs CBD with a number of youths in the vehicle and hanging out of windows.
An unmarked police vehicle attempted to approach the stolen motor vehicle, with an unknown offender throwing a rock and smashing the window of the police vehicle.
The driver of the police vehicle was uninjured.
The stolen motor vehicle was found abandoned a short time later along Leichardt Terrace and the Drone Unit was deployed.
Four male youths and a female youth were taken into custody without incident.
Two 10-year-olds, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old male will be further dealt with in accordance with the Youth Justice Act 2005.
A 14-year-old female remains in custody.
Commander James Gray-Spence said, “Police continue to do incredible work balancing the need to apprehend stolen motor vehicles, public safety considerations and officer safety. The use of drones to monitor conduct and inform police deployments will continue to be an important tool in the response”.
“Damage to police vehicles and attacks on our officers are inexcusable and will not be tolerated. I want to stress that anyone engaging in stealing cars and hoon behaviour is risking their lives and the lives of their friends and others in the community.
“My message to them is that you will be stopped, you will be caught, and you will face consequences. Assaulting police officers while that happens will only make those consequences harsher for you, don’t do it.”
