Assisting with Exemption for community events

Wingecarribee Shire

We’re advocating for village communities who told us the requirements of a DA to hold events on bushfire-prone land was prohibiting social connection.

Our village communities have for 5 years sought changes that will allow events such as carols in the park or local fundraisers on sports ovals, which are largely run by community volunteers, to happen without the need for a complicated and costly DA process.

Several Village Associations have expressed a strong desire for this to happen as quickly as possible so that events to connect our village communities can go ahead unhindered.

Understanding the importance this holds for village community members, Council resolved earlier this year to pursue an amendment to the Local Environment Plan that would recognise these small scale community events as exempt development. Following consultation with NSW Rural Fire Service, we have undertaken the lengthy process of developing a Planning Proposal and supporting documentation to amend Schedule 2 of the Wingecarribee Local Environment Plan (LEP) 2020 to allow this exemption. This documentation was today submitted to the Department of Planning & Environment.
