Australia and China sign MoU to advance steel decarbonisation

Dept of Industry, Science and Resources

The MoU will underpin the Australia-China Policy Dialogue on Steel Decarbonisation leaders agreed to establish during Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s visit to China in July 2025. It reflects a shared commitment to reduce emissions across the iron and steel value chains.

The policy dialogue will provide a forum to share insights and explore opportunities for decarbonising these sectors. It will focus on:

  • iron and steel value chain decarbonisation pathways
  • decarbonised iron and steel markets and trade
  • respective domestic policy settings and opportunities for cooperation.

Steel and ironmaking account for up to 9% of global emissions. Demand for low-emissions steel will grow significantly in the coming decades, making collaboration essential for global decarbonisation efforts.

Australia will host the inaugural dialogue in 2026.
