Today I announce the appointment of Ms Fiona Hoggart as Australia’s next Consul-General in Surabaya.
Underpinned by our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, Australia’s relationship with Indonesia serves as one of our most important partnerships. Our extensive cooperation spans strategic, security, economic and people-to-people ties, which are more important than ever as we work together to respond to and recover from COVID-19.
Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city, is an important destination for Australian trade and investment. Australia’s mission in Surabaya reflects our long-standing connection to East Java, a province which now accounts for approximately 14 per cent of Indonesia’s gross domestic product.
The Consulate-General in Surabaya works to bolster people-to-people links in the eastern and central regions of Indonesia and provide consular and other services to Australians in East and Central Java. As Consul-General in Surabaya, Ms Hoggart will focus on enhancing trade and building economic partnership opportunities in East and Central Java, including in financial services, education, health, manufacturing and infrastructure.
Ms Hoggart is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and was recently Senior Adviser, Americas and Europe, International Division, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. She has previously served overseas in Honiara and Jakarta. In Canberra she has worked on a range of important regional issues within DFAT, as well as helping coordinate DFAT’s COVID-19 response.
Ms Hoggart holds a Master of International Law from the Australian National University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University.
