Australia’s largest operating steam engine comes to Penrith for one day only

Rail heritage comes to life in Penrith as Beyer-Garratt 6029, Australia’s largest operating steam locomotive, hits the tracks for a day of historic steam train rides.

Passengers will enjoy a 1-hour, non-stop trip from Penrith Station to Springwood and return behind ‘the Garratt’, taking in parts of the scenic Blue Mountains along the way.

“The Penrith Steam Shuttles event is a fantastic opportunity for families and heritage enthusiasts to take a ride back in time and connect with our state’s rich transport history,” said Transport Heritage NSW Spokesperson, David Bennett.

“Locomotive 6029 was originally a freight engine, first introduced by the NSW Railways in 1954.”

“It recently underwent major boiler repairs earlier this year and has since been returned to heritage service with a fresh coat of paint featuring its original red lining.”

Penrith Steam Shuttles operates on Sunday 20 October 2019 with five 1-hour trips departing Penrith at 10.00am, 11.15am, 1.00pm, 2.15pm and 3.35pm. Customers can choose to travel in Standard, Premier or Lounge class heritage carriages.
