After a two year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions the annual Armidale Autumn Festival is returning this year with a new date on 2 April and a wonderful new format that will stimulate activation of the Armidale mall and the CBD precinct.
The Armidale Autumn Festival has been an institution and beacon for civic pride in the city of Armidale for over 30 years and Council’s event’s team have identified an opportunity to modify the existing event for 2022 to re-invigorate the CBD.
Several meetings with participating organisations and groups assisted in identifying the key features and benefits of the Autumn Festival that kept its strengths, yet could align better with the objectives of CBD precinct activation.
This year the event will not have the usual parade through the CBD. However the performers that have provided entertainment in the traditional parade march will now be invited to perform on the new stage. The new format will allow local organisations to showcase their talent including pipe bands, school musicals, school bands, New England Conservatorium of Music, aboriginal dancers, UNE colleges, highland dancers.
Armidale Mayor Sam Coupland said the new format for this year will still showcase what we love about the Autumn Festival but will be ramping up the entertainment to peak new interest in the event.
“Long running events like the Autumn Festival need to evolve and change as the community’s interests change,” said Mayor Coupland.
“Autumn has traditionally been an important season for our region that evokes so much community and civic pride for the wonderful city of Armidale. Our region is a stand-out performer for its dazzling display of autumn colour and fabulous local talent. We are looking forward to seeing them on show along with the autumn colour for this year’s Armidale Autumn Festival.”
Council’s events team will be liaising with Arts North West and other community groups to assist in the planning and delivery of the event. An array of food stalls and trucks will be in attendance, classic car display and local businesses will be encouraged to extend their opening hours in the afternoon.
