The new Bairnsdale Skate Park is a step closer after a construction contract was awarded at this month’s East Gippsland Shire Council meeting.
Council accepted the tender from Grind Projects for $495,330.
The upgrade includes removing and modifying the park’s steel elements, which will result in a variety of new features for skate park users when combined with the additional obstacles.
These features were determined in consultation with skaters who offered great ideas for improvements during the consultation undertaken on this project last year.
Mayor Cr John White said the new layout will allow all user groups to benefit from the smooth, open transition between elements.
“The new skate park will be built in the same location within Davison Oval but will be bigger and include a skate bowl,” Cr White said.
“The elevated bowl and the transition into tiered platforms with concrete ramps and rails will give users a quality skate park that will provide a regional hub for enthusiasts.”
The project will be jointly funded by a $250,000 grant from Sports Recreation Victoria, with the remainder funded by Council.
A start date will be negotiated with the successful tenderer. Construction is expected to take 10 weeks to complete with the skate park to be closed to the public during this time.
An independent assessment in 2017 found the Bairnsdale Skate Park was in poor condition and needed an urgent upgrade to ensure users’ safety.
The skate park is expected to last up to 25 years with minimal maintenance needed and will create a great new skating destination for Bairnsdale.
This project follows skate park upgrades in Paynesville and Orbost over recent years.
