Baw Baw receives Black Spot funding

Baw Baw Shire Council has secured funding through the National Black Spot Funding Program to address safety issues on two local roads.

Thomson Dam Access Road in Thomson and Fisher Road in Drouin West will receive $256,620 and $124,670 respectively towards crucial safety upgrades, which will be delivered as part of Council’s 2020-2021 Capital Works Program.

The Fisher Road project will aim to reduce the occurrence of run-off-road crashes, particularly in poor lighting conditions. The works will also address the risk of head-on collisions due to inadequate delineation and the width of the road corners.

As part of the project, curves along the northern sections of the road will be widened, new safety barriers will be installed and improvements will be made to the roadside delineation with new guideposts, chevron alignment markers and advisory speed signs.

The Thomson Dam Access Road project will cover a 4.5km section of the road to reduce the possibility of run-off-road crashes along the tight horizontal curves and declines on a steep vertical grade from south to north.

Safety improvements will include new barriers on two sections of the road that have steep embankments, upgrades to all non-compliant guard rail terminals and improvements to the roadside delineation with new guideposts, chevron alignment markers and advisory speed signs.

Council will move onto the planning and delivery phase of these projects and will keep the community informed. The works are scheduled for delivery in early 2021.

As stated by Mayor Danny Goss

“We’re grateful for the Federal Government’s continued investment in the Black Spot Program, which has helped Council to deliver significant safety upgrades over a number of years. Both projects will deliver a range of long-term measures to reduce the risk of accidents occurring in the future, helping to keep our community safe.”
