Bayside has marked Australian Citizenship Day by welcoming 125 new citizens from 37 countries at a special citizenship ceremony.
Celebrated nationally on 17 September, Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity to reflect on the meaning, responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, and to recognise the people who choose to make Australia their home.
Bayside Mayor Cr Debbie Taylor-Haynes said the ceremony was a fitting way to celebrate the occasion and welcome Bayside’s newest citizens.
“Citizenship is both a privilege and a responsibility, and our nation is strengthened every time we welcome new citizens,” Cr Taylor-Haynes said.
“Whether we arrived decades ago or only recently, we are united by a shared commitment to Australia and its people.”
Across the country, thousands of people become citizens in local ceremonies each year on Australian Citizenship Day, celebrating Australia’s diversity and the common bond of citizenship.
