Bayside Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Award Nomination – Litter Prevention Award

Bin Your Butt: Bayside Cigarette Butt Litter Bin Trial

Fifteen (15) locations were chosen to trial thirty (30) cigarette butt bin infrastructure. The infrastructure, in conjunction with NSW EPA signage, was installed to direct and make smokers aware of the new disposal facilities, whilst also creating a safe community space for smoking. The combination of signage and infrastructure at the sites, with social media education and stakeholder engagement has enabled project success. The amount of cigarette butt litter in the trial locations have reduced significantly by 56%; and because of this, there have been requests for the installation of cigarette butt bins at other locations within the Council area. From the installation of the bins in February 2021 to September 2021, 174,800 cigarette butts were collected and recycled by the subcontractor from these new bins. Education posts over the course of the project reached in excess of 34,708 people (social media tracking). This project was funded by a NSW EPA litter grant.
