BCA welcomes Senators’ private bills to split workplace measures

Business Council of Australia

The Business Council strongly supports the proposal of Senators Jacqui Lambie and David Pocock to bring forward consideration of four measures that should never have been packaged up with the Government’s workplace relations omnibus Bill, Business Council chief executive Bran Black said.

“These measures include support for first responders suffering from PTSD, enhancing protections from discrimination for workers experiencing domestic violence; changes to the small business redundancy exemption; and extending the role of the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency to cover silica and silicosis.

“This is the right step, ensuring these important measures are considered separately to the rest of the government’s proposed changes.

“The Senators note the complexities of the other elements of the Bill, which represent the most radical changes to Australia’s workplace relations system in decades.

“These other changes will add to uncertainty and the cost of living at a time when Australian families can least afford it, while undermining the job security of the very people they purport to protect.”
