Western Australia’s peak secondary education awards were today awarded to Pooja Ramesh from Perth Modern School and Jess Haydon from Swan Valley Anglican Community School.
Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery was joined by the Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia to present the winners with their medals in Kings Park this morning.
The Beazley Medal is named after the Governor’s father, Kim Edward Beazley, a former teacher and Federal Minister for Education.
Pooja won the Beazley Medal: WA Certificate of Education for the highest examination marks across five ATAR courses in Year 12.
Jess has been awarded the Beazley Medal: Vocational Education and Training (VET) based on his strong Year 12 performance in a VET program.
Pooja has also won a General Exhibition, Subject Exhibition and Subject Certificate of Excellence: Economics, Subject Certificate of Excellence: Literature, Subject Certificate of Excellence: Mathematics Methods and a Certificate of Distinction.
In addition to a significant number of hours in the workplace, Jess also received a VET Exhibition and VET Certificate of Excellence: Construction Industries, a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, Certificate II in Civil Construction and a Certificate II in Visual Arts.
4,298 awards were won in 2018, including 50 General Exhibitions and 41 Subject Exhibitions.
A presentation was held at Kings Park for the Beazley Medal recipients, their families and school principals.
A formal ceremony will be held at Government House in February 2019 where all students will be presented with their awards.
