- The Crisafulli Government is delivering health services when you need them and strengthening healthcare across Central Queensland after a decade of decline by Labor.
The Crisafulli Government is ensuring women and families in Gladstone are one step closer to accessing improved maternity and paediatric care, with Gladstone Hospital’s new purpose-built Women and Family Centre reaching practical completion. The more than $16 million investment has delivered a new centre and is part of the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to deliver easier access to health services, ensuring Central Queensland communities receive world-class healthcare. During Labor’s decade of decline, residents of Gladstone suffered extended birthing bypass, critical health infrastructure was left to crumble, and there was no masterplan for Gladstone Hospital’s future. The Crisafulli Government is rescuing the Gladstone Hospital with a new state-of-the-art modular hospital expansion to deliver 51 beds and treatment spaces in 2027, on top of a brand-new transit lounge that is already operational.
It’s just one of the ways the Crisafulli Government is delivering health services when you need them and healing Labor’s Health Crisis. The new Women and Family Centre is a purpose-built facility to provide family-centred maternity, neonatal and paediatric care, and features:
13 single maternity rooms with ensuites
2 new birthing rooms
2 early labour and induction-of-labour suites
A dedicated nursery for newborn care
8 single ensuite rooms for paediatric patients.
With construction now reaching practical completion, services are expected to commence operating within a matter of weeks. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said this new facility would provide a more comfortable and supportive service for women and families, closer to home. “After a decade of decline under Labor left Queensland’s health system in crisis, the Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job of delivering the infrastructure and services communities need,” Minister Nicholls said. “This purpose-built facility will provide greater privacy, comfort and dignity for women, babies and children, while supporting clinicians to deliver high-quality care in a modern environment. “Importantly, this is just one part of the work we are doing in Gladstone through our Hospital Rescue Plan, alongside the new Transit Lounge, expanded Walk-in Clinic hours and additional clinical capacity through the modular expansion project.” Member for Callide Bryson Head said while it would take time to heal Labor’s Health Crisis, the Crisafulli Government had reduced the elective surgery waitlist to its lowest level since November 2023. “Unfortunately, the Gladstone Hospital was completely neglected by the former Labor government, who refused to invest in maintenance or plan for the hospital’s future,” Mr Head said. “That’s why the Crisafulli Government’s Hospital Rescue Plan is delivering for Gladstone families, who deserve access to contemporary healthcare facilities without having to leave their community. “The Crisafulli Government is ensuring communities like Gladstone are no longer overlooked and have access to the healthcare infrastructure they need now and into the future.” Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Lisa Blackler said the new centre would enhance services and enable the outstanding maternity and paediatric teams to deliver an even better experience for women, babies and children in the Gladstone region. “As a nurse and qualified midwife, I am passionate about ensuring our birthing spaces support privacy, comfort and family connection during such an important time,” Ms Blacker said.
