Blacktown City Council has joined the long and growing list of Governments and organisations officially condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In an address to last night’s Council Meeting, Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM, said; “Blacktown City Council stood with the people of Ukraine and condemned this unjust Russian military attack.”

“The Ukrainian flag now flies proudly alongside the Australian flag and the Aboriginal flag above Council’s Administration Centre in Blacktown.” Mayor Bleasdale said today.

“Blacktown City is home to more than 400,000 people representing 188 countries and speaking more than 180 languages.

“For decades, we have accepted thousands of refugees and migrants to our City and we stand ready now to welcome refugees from Ukraine into our communities.

“To this end, I have written to the Minister for Immigration, urging the Federal Government to fast track the process of bringing Ukrainian refugees to Australia.

“Blacktown City has a long and proud history of assisting refugees from conflicts including Vietnam, Southern Africa, the Middle East and Afghanistan.

“We have a vast network of government and non-government refugee and migrant support services that can assist those who are escaping the Russian invasion.” Mayor Bleasdale said.
