Young people across Brimbank in Melbourne’s west are sharing their stories and having their voices heard through a new youth-led magazine, The Bold Source.
The first edition of The Bold Source has just been launched digitally, featuring written and visual works that tell the diverse stories and experiences of young people in Brimbank.
Brimbank City Council Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou, said the bi-annual magazine provides an important space for self-expression for creative young people aged 12 to 25 who live, study, work or have a connection to Brimbank.
‘We are one of the most diverse municipalities in Victoria, covering parts of the west from Sunshine to Sydenham, Deer Park to Derrimut. The stories and opinions shared by young people in The Bold Source represent this richness and diversity,’ Cr Papafotiou said.
‘Now, more than ever, with some of the difficulties facing our community due to COVID-19, it’s vital for our young people to feel connected, have a voice, and share what’s important in their world, with the world. The Bold Source is something they can feel proud of.’
The Bold Source is led by an editorial committee of local young people aged 12-25, tasked with giving other young people a meaningful platform for their voices.
The inaugural edition is centred on the theme of advocacy and making change.
It elevates young voices from Melbourne’s west, tackling thought-provoking topics from racism, to mental health, LGBTIQ+ rights, film-making, creativity and personal identity.
The magazine contains all kinds of written and visual works, from first-person accounts to fiction, poetry, interviews, comics and painting.
The front cover artwork is by Footscray-based artist and Indigenous activist, Aretha Brown, who is also the subject of an interview about her advocacy.
