Boosting Business and Services: Jabiru Jumps On Board NBN

NT Government

Residents in Jabiru can look forward to fast and reliable fibre connectivity, with the Northern Territory Government today announcing it has partnered with the NBN Co. to rollout the National Broadband Network in the township.

The $4.5 million project will be pivotal in positioning Jabiru as a central tourism hub in the heart of Kakadu National Park.

The increased connectivity will not only create more jobs for Territorians throughout the installation process, but it will also put more businesses on the map, with new opportunities for increased reach and markets.

The rollout will also improve the amenities at established tourist accommodations in Jabiru, with visitors able to access high quality WiFi, to stay connected and share their travel experiences faster.

In addition to local businesses, the broadband fibre-to-the-premises will reach more than 700 homes, as well as education services. Health providers will also benefit from the rollout, with faster connectivity improving and expanding the delivery of telehealth services.

It’s expected the roll-out will be complete by the end of 2021.

Today’s announcement supports the Northern Territory’s Government commitment to the ongoing delivery of essential services in Jabiru, under the Memorandum of Understanding on the Future of Jabiru Township.

The Government is investing $135.5 million to help the township establish itself as the centre for tourism and culture in Kakadu and the West Arnhem region.

As stated by Corporate and Digital Development Minister, Paul Kirby:

“No matter where they live, Territorians deserve to have access to the same telecommunications services as other Australians.”

“The rollout of the NBN in Jabiru will not only improve health and education services, but it will be dynamic in boosting the town’s economic development, and creating new and sustainable jobs for locals along the way.”

“Connecting Territory communities is a key direction in our Digital Territory Strategy, to ensure reliable and sustainable internet and phone access to remote communities across the Territory.”
