Boosting police numbers in northern Tasmania

Felix Ellis, Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management

For the first time ever, Tasmania Police has run a northern-based recruit course allowing 17 trainee constables to complete their training in Launceston.

This is an important initiative to help people from the north and northwest to become police officers without having to travel to Hobart.

The 2022 northern pilot course has been a great success and I am pleased to announce a northern-based course will run again in 2023.

This will boost Tasmania Police numbers State-wide, and I encourage anyone who’s ever considered becoming a police officer to take that first step and apply.

It has been great to speak to some of the current northern-based recruits and hear how beneficial it has been for them to be able to train close to home.

I hope from this we will see many people from Launceston, Burnie and surrounding regions consider policing as a career.

Since coming to office, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has been recruiting an extra 329 police officers, which will bring Tasmania to a record number of 1,449 by July 2026.
