Border security essential: Bernardi

Australian Conservatives Release

It looks like Labor and the Greens will be blocking attempts by the Morrison government to repeal Labor’s controversial medevac bill.

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi opposed the bill in the Senate but it passed with the supporting Victorian Senator Derryn Hinch, Labor and the Greens.

The Australian reports, Labor’s immigration spokesman Shayne Neumann , a key architect of the bill, has urged his party to stick with the policy in the wake of the disastrous federal election result.

With senior Left faction MP Anthony Albanese Labor’s new leader, the Coalition will try to test the opposition’s commitment to border protection by following through on an election commitment to overturn the medevac legislation.

Mr Albanese voted against boat turnbacks in 2015, saying he personally would be unable to turn around a boat of asylum-seekers.

Senator Bernardi told Sky News his position on the medevac legislation hasn’t changed and it needs to be repealed.
