Brave Breast Cancer Survivors Told to Cover Up

JOINT MEDIA STATEMENT

BRAVE BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS TOLD TO COVER UP

Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) and Bakers Delight are deeply disappointed that Facebook has banned this year’s Pink Bun campaign images of breast cancer survivors’ scars and mastectomies due to the platform’s strict nudity policies.

The images that feature in Bakers Delight’s thought-provoking and brave campaign that raises funds for BCNA show women and a man without tops on holding buns and rolls over their breasts in an effort to highlight the real impact of a breast cancer diagnosis.

Despite previously approving the pictures for the campaign’s Facebook ads, the platform has now stated that the images are in violation of its partial nudity policy.

BCNA believes it is impossible to show the full reality of breast cancer’s impact if a survivor is forced to cover up. This nonsensical decision threatens to significantly reduce the campaign’s effectiveness to raise awareness and much needed funds for BCNA.

Bakers Delight’s dealings with Facebook had been encouraging throughout the approval process, the change of heart is both unexpected and disappointing.

BCNA and Bakers Delight call on Facebook to reconsider its decision and assist BCNA’s efforts to provide free support to the thousands of Australians diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
