Nabila Elrich is not your average 32-year-old. In her spare time the chef and mum of one runs the Sydney arm of a social media-based charity, which links members with groceries and hot meals in South Western Sydney.
“I started to cook and found it was a great opportunity to give back to the communities where I’ve always had strong connections,” Ms Elrich said.
“The social media group, Care2share, provides a platform for support and a place to meet people through food sharing. And it’s a space where you can share your story and culture too.”
After going through a divorce two years ago, Ms Elrich was introduced to the Facebook group by a family friend.
Now the area administration manager for Care2share’s Sydney and Melbourne branches, she oversees its 10,000 strong community, which has more than doubled in the past year.
“Everybody is welcome to join Care2share. We get people from all walks of life and there’s no assessment process,” Ms Elrich said.
“The group supports students, families, new migrants and anyone else needing a healthy cooked meal. We really cover a whole range of the community. We’ve even just had a sweets giveaway for kids who’ve gone through the lockdown.”
Ms Elrich says COVID restrictions had affected logistics, but now they’ve been started to be lifted Care2share is looking forward to hosting community barbecues and other social events.
“We’ve started to see member engagement really lift again, which is fantastic,” Ms Elrich said.
“During lockdown, things were often tough, but the community always found a way to come together even if they couldn’t in person, and make it happen.”
Minister for Multiculturalism Natalie Ward said local groups play a vital role in supporting diverse communities.
“When we help those around us, we stay connected and grassroots initiatives like Care2share are helping build more resilient and inclusive communities,” Mrs Ward said.
Member for East Hills Wendy Lindsay thanked non-profit organisations for their ongoing efforts.
“Care2share and other charities contribute an enormous amount to our communities and play a vital support role, especially during difficult times,” Ms Lindsay said.
