Brewing up long-term economic strength

Roger Jaensch,Minister for State Growth

Tasmania’s economy is the strongest in the nation, but we know that COVID-19 has created an uncertain operating environment for many businesses. Since the onset of the pandemic, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has been listening and responding to their needs, with more than $160 million in assistance accessed by Tasmanian businesses so far.

Through our Building Projects Support Program, we have invested $25 million into 32 local community and commercial projects around the state, giving them the confidence to bring forward plans to build, develop and expand. Together, these projects will inject $238 million into our economy, with the second round of funding alone expected to create 520 additional ongoing jobs for Tasmanians at a time when we need them most.

Du Cane Brewing Co is one of the businesses that will help build our economic future after receiving funding through the program.

The brewery received funding from the second round of the program with $400,000 in support to bring to life their $2.8 million brewing vision.

As with all of the projects we are supporting, the Du Cane Brewing project would have remained in the planning stages for much longer without this support.

Once complete Du Cane will have a purpose-built brewery and dining hall to support the expansion of the Du Cane Beer range and provide additional event space for festivals such as MONA FOMA and Junction Arts Festival.

The project will also provide a communal space for visitors to Tasmania with a strong focus on Tasmania’s world-renowned bush walking and outdoor experiences.

It is just the type of project that will help Tasmania’s nation-leading economy continue to grow by stimulating spending, bringing new and returning visitors to our state and sustaining local jobs.

Each of the projects we are supporting is providing its own immediate economic and jobs boost to local communities through increased building and construction activity, as well as promising a long-term economic return to our state.

By working closely with the commercial, community, tourism and hospitality and health care sectors we are confident our investment will continue to provide long-term benefits right around Tasmania.
