The Old Capricorn Highway Bridge at Scrubby Creek, Gracemere is undergoing a reconstruction to improve safety and access to the area.
Works commenced last week to demolish the existing single-lane structure and replace it with a new double-lane concrete culvert.
The project has been jointly funded through an 80% contribution of $944,000 from the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program, and the remainder through Council’s Capital Works budget.
Rockhampton Regional Council’s Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith said it was timely to see the ageing infrastructure renewed on the back of the Capricorn Highway Duplication works and ahead of Ring Road project.
“Safety is the key driver for projects like this and with the bridge at end of life, this upgrade will cater for growing traffic and provide increased safety for motorists,” Cr Smith said.
The existing bridge has a load limit of 20 tonnes which restricts some heavy vehicle access along the route, and with this section of the highway being a major freight and transport thoroughfare, the upgrade will significantly enhance access too.
“The works are estimated to be completed in February 2024, subject to weather and ground conditions, so we ask motorists who regularly travel along this highway for their patience and to obey road signs during this time.
“We are pleased to be collaborating with the Federal Government to deliver this project, which is one of seven bridges scheduled to be upgraded through this funding program in Queensland.”
