Broome training centre to produce more skilled hospitality workers a step closer

  • Design finalised by local Kimberley architect for North Regional TAFE’s new Broome Hospitality and Student Services Centre
  • State-of-the-art facilities will give the region greater access to speciality training in hospitality, tourism, hair and beauty
  • Project part of $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan and largest TAFE capital works program in the State’s history, creating more than 1,000 jobs
  • North Regional TAFE’s Broome Hospitality and Student Services Centre has moved forward with tenders for the construction of the $10 million project now open.

Local firm Engawa Architects has finalised the design for the development of two new buildings at the Broome campus; one for hospitality and tourism and the second for hair and beauty training, which will be linked by an outdoor meeting place.

The project also includes an extension to the administration building to provide additional space for student and corporate services.

The redevelopment will provide a welcome boost to hospitality and tourism training in the Kimberley region, and facilitate industry-standard practice in hair and beauty.

The new training centre for Broome was announced in July 2020 as part of the WA Recovery Plan, which will see a record $167.4 million invested in upgrades to essential infrastructure across Western Australia’s five TAFE colleges.

Major upgrades will add vitality to campus life for all students and visitors, and create jobs for local construction workers.

Construction is anticipated to start in July 2021 with estimated completion in July 2022.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“The McGowan Government is committed to providing outstanding learning opportunities for students, and generating a pipeline of local jobs to strengthen regional Western Australia’s economy.

“We want to ensure that industry has access to highly skilled local workers.

“The $10 million project is part of the McGowan Government’s WA Recovery Plan to drive economic and social recovery, and create jobs for Western Australians.”

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna:

“This major campus upgrade will support Broome and the wider Kimberley region’s vital hospitality and tourism industry by offering hands-on training in a world-class training facility.

“I am committed to ensuring local businesses have access to local skilled workers to ensure we can thrive as a region.”
