Building a better Burnie Court

Elise Archer,Attorney-General and Minister for Justice

The Tasmanian Government is committed to ensuring that all Tasmanians have access to an effective and efficient justice system.

We recognise that the Burnie Courts building is out-dated and not fit for purpose. As a result, our Government has committed $15 million to deliver a court complex that will service the region into the future.

About 50,000 Tasmanians rely on access to the courts in Burnie each year alone, so it is critical that any impact on service delivery be kept to a minimum.

Therefore, I am pleased to announce that the Government will bring forward $5.9 million of its $15 million investment in improving access to court services in Burnie. This includes significant funding brought forward to this financial year to undertake early works.

The design work that has been undertaken to date has revealed the need to spend additional time planning to ensure we continue to deliver essential court services while work is being undertaken.

The investment will provide better access to justice for those in the North West by enabling the long-term continuation of Magistrate and Supreme Court services in Burnie in fit-for-purpose premises, while at the same time ensuring minimal interruption for court users.
