Building our future workforce with free TAFE for Territorians

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government together with the Australian Government is providing free TAFE courses in 2024 to upskill Territorians and ease cost of living pressures.

The Territory Labor Government invests more than $90 million each year under our Skilling the Territory Investment Plan, to grow a skilled and capable workforce and achieve a $40 billion economy by 2030.

Under the Fee-Free TAFE program, Territorians can study over 80 TAFE courses for free across a number of sectors including construction, agriculture, hospitality and tourism, child care, aged care and more.

Between 2024-2026 an additional 2,200 Free TAFE training placements will be made available to support Territorians to study with Charles Darwin University and Batchelor Institute. To date over 1,500 Territorians have undertaken a free TAFE course.

The free TAFE courses will see the next generation of Territorians supported in their future careers with the Territory offering plenty of opportunities to train and have a rewarding career in the NT.

For example, students enrolling in Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care will save $22,832 under the free TAFE initiative.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) provides Territorians with practical, transferable skills, work experience and the foundations towards a solid career.

Through free TAFE courses, you can study a nationally accredited diploma, certificate or short course. These courses can prepare you for work in fast growing industries needing skilled workers.

Free TAFE is a jointly funded initiative of the Australian Government and the Northern Territory Government and was first launched in 2023 and has been rolled out in each state and territory to tackle a national skills shortage.
