Buy local seafood this Easter

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

Tasmanians are being encouraged to buy local, freshly caught and produced fish this Easter and support local businesses and jobs.

During the COVID-19 crisis, it is more important than ever to buy local and support each other, and Easter is a perfect time to get behind our Tasmanian industries.

Our world class seafood is prized across the globe, gracing the menus of some of the finest restaurants both in Australia and internationally.

Tasmania’s wild fisheries and aquaculture industries directly employ thousands of locals and support an extensive local supply chain of businesses, with jobs created across the state, many in regional areas.

In recognition of the current pressures on businesses and families, particularly the fisheries sector, the Government has invested $5.5 million of direct support, along with other grants, loans and payroll tax benefits to industry.

But all of us can help and I encourage every Tasmanian to get behind our fantastic Tasmanian producers and support them by buying local product, especially this Easter.

As the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council states, “Seafood is a staple for an Aussie Easter lunch and our seafood industry and retailers are making sure Tasmanians can still access healthy, delicious local seafood to cook at home. There’s something for everyone, in every price range”.

We hope Tasmanians will get behind their local seafood businesses. This will support our fishers, marine farmers, processors and retailers. Importantly, it will help support the communities they live in.
