Camden is being painted REaD this week

The Paint the Town REaD initiative is back and children aged zero to 12 years are encouraged to read, talk, sing, rhyme and play to prepare them for reading and writing when commencing school.

Paint Camden REaD Week which will run from Monday 28 March to Friday 1 April 2022, aims to encourage children to engage in reading regularly at school and home. The week-long event celebrates reading, singing, rhyming, and playing every day. Marketing packs have been supplied to early learning centres including daily themes, promotional material, learning activities.

Activities throughout the week will focus on the themes as follows:

  • Monday – emotions;
  • Tuesday – the environment;
  • Wednesday – healthy eating;
  • Thursday – animals; and
  • Friday – around the world.

Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the initiative was a wonderful way to teach our young residents about the importance of reading and learning.

“Paint the Town REaD encourages schools, childcare centres and parents to spread awareness of the important messages, so children can learn from a young age,” Cr Fedeli said.

“Visiting the library is a great way to introduce children to books and reading. The Camden Kids website has multiple booklists that can assist in determining appropriate levels of reading for children.

“Whether you’re a teacher, parent, carer, or grandparent, I encourage you to support them in their early literacy and language skills to help them prepare for when they start school.

“Today’s learners are tomorrow’s leaders, so let’s support them in every way we can!”
