Council is seeking community input on a project to help identify and map important agricultural land, along with significant agricultural landscapes and views across the Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA).
The Cessnock LGA is known for its rural character and picturesque viticultural and agricultural landscapes. As our region grows, urban development and other activities have the potential to encroach on these important areas.
Council is looking to retain, protect and enhance these significant areas to preserve the identity and character of our LGA, regional employment and food security. As part of this, they want to hear from the community about what areas they consider to be significant, and why.
Residents are encouraged to have their say via an interactive map which will be available on Council’s website until Monday 3 January 2022 via the Have your say section of our website.
Cessnock City Council’s General Manager, Lotta Jackson, said while residents will be asked to pinpoint on a map the area they consider to be important, they will also be asked to explain why they have chosen the area.
“Important agricultural land could be land that has potential for grazing, significant views could be a lookout, and the significant landscape could be tree-lined rural roads.”
“The information we get from community will help us develop planning controls to protect these areas, so I really encourage residents to take part in the consultation,” added Lotta.
