Property Council ACT Executive Director Ashlee Berry said Canberra had outgrown its existing facilities and needed a venue capable of attracting major sporting, entertainment and cultural events befitting the nation’s capital.
“Canberra deserves a stadium worthy of the National Capital.
“We have consistently called for a modern, world class, multi-purpose stadium that can support elite sport, major events, concerts and entertainment while helping drive activity, investment and jobs in the heart of the city.
“Today’s vision is an exciting contribution to that conversation – it’s exactly the type of big-picture thinking Canberra needs.”
Ms Berry said major venues should not be viewed simply as sporting infrastructure, but as economic infrastructure that helps activate city centres, support local businesses and attract visitors.
“A world-class stadium would be a city-shaping investment, and the economic benefits would extend well beyond match days.
“It would bring more people into our CBD, support hotels, restaurants, bars and retailers, and strengthen Canberra’s appeal as a destination for major national and international events.
“It would create the kind of activity and vibrancy that successful cities around Australia enjoy.
“It would also complement the significant investments already planned for the Convention and Entertainment Precinct and help create a stronger, more vibrant city centre.”
Ms Berry said the Property Council’s ACT Election Platform in 2024 had called for delivery of a new Canberra Stadium alongside other major infrastructure priorities because such projects play an important role in supporting economic growth, tourism and city vibrancy.
“Our vision has always been for a stadium that is integrated into the city, connected to public transport and linked to Canberra’s business, tourism and cultural precincts.
“As our city grows, we need infrastructure that reflects our status as Australia’s capital and supports the next generation of economic growth.
“We welcome today’s contribution to that discussion and look forward to seeing further detail about how a project of this scale could help shape Canberra’s future.”
