The inner north is set for an environmental transformation as Canberrans are being asked to comment on a vision for Sullivans Creek which will re-naturalise concrete waterways.
Minister for the Environment Rebecca Vassarotti said the proposal will replace concrete in Sullivans Creek with native water plants that will trap nutrients and bolster biodiversity in the region.
“This is the next project in a suite of announcements we’ve made to protect, connect and restore our biodiversity in the Canberra region,” Minister Vassarotti said.
“By delivering on habitat connectivity projects like these, we are ensuring more native species have a place to call home while delivering a beautiful urban environment for Canberrans.
“Our vision for Sullivans Creek is to create an ecological corridor through the city, which gives our wildlife space to move through the landscape and preserve Canberra’s natural beauty and cultural heritage”.
“This vision is part of the ACT Government’s $2.95 million investment in the 2022-23 ACT Budget’s ‘Connecting Nature, Connecting People’ initiative. This initiative will work to protect and restore the ACT environment, while further strengthening Canberrans’ connection to nature.
“The waterways and landscape linked to Sullivans Creek hold significant cultural importance to the local Ngunnawal community, which is why it is integral that the government put efforts towards revitalising this area.
“This is a good opportunity for Canberrans to think about how our city can be more climate resilient so we can protect our native species in their local habitats.”
There will be two opportunities to provide in-person feedback with community pop-ups being run on the 11th of November at the Epic Markets and 15th of November at the Dickson Shops.”
