Canberrans urged to reduce home fire risk this winter

With winter upon us, many Canberrans are dusting off their heaters and preparing for the cold weather.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman is calling on everyone to keep safety front of mind, including through minimising fire risks around the home.

“House fires are more common in the cooler months when heating and electrical appliances are used more frequently, and they can become fatal in less than three minutes,” Minister Gentleman said.

ACT Fire and Rescue Chief Officer Matthew Mavity said firefighters have responded to more than 40 structure fires this year already and most of them could have been prevented.

“Some things Canberrans should never be complacent about include leaving cooking unattended, cleaning the lint filter in their dryer and always keeping flammable materials at least one metre from the heater,” Chief Officer Mavity said.

Minister Gentleman said as well as knowing how to prevent a fire starting in their homes, it is essential that Canberrans know what to do if a fire does start.

“I encourage everyone to take some time this weekend to create and practice a fire escape plan. It only takes a few minutes and is a simple, practical way to ensure your household knows what to do in the event of a house fire.

“We urge the community to reduce home fire risks and stay safe this winter. If a fire does start in your home, it is important to respond immediately, evacuate your home or building and call Emergency Triple Zero (000),” Minister Gentleman said.
