Cancelled learner-driver in court after police pursuit at Liverpool, NSW

A cancelled learner-driver has been charged after he allegedly drove at police vehicles in Sydney’s south-west.

Just before 1am today (Monday 11 May 2020), officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command attempted to stop a driver in a Toyota Corolla, who was allegedly driving dangerously on Hoxton Park Road, Cartwright.

The 27-year-old man allegedly failed to stop and accelerated harshly away from police.

Officers commenced a pursuit of the Corolla along nearby Maxwells Avenue then onto Elizabeth Drive, where the car allegedly drove onto the wrong side of the road.

Police terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns.

Officers will allege the car continued to drive dangerously throughout the area and forced two police cars to take evasive action to avoid collisions on Flowerdale Road and Elizabeth Drive, Liverpool.

A short time later, police located the vehicle abandoned on Larkview Avenue, Chester Hill.

Officers searched the area and allegedly found the man hiding in the yard of a nearby property on Curtis Road, Chester Hill.

He was arrested and searched, with police allegedly finding keys to the Corolla and a flick knife.

The man was taken to Liverpool Police Station, where he was charged with a number of offences, including:

  • Police pursuit – drive dangerously
  • Drive while licence cancelled
  • Two counts of use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention
  • Drive in manner dangerous
  • Enter enclosed lands without lawful excuse
  • Carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, and;
  • Charged by virtue of an outstanding warrant for the offence of aggravated robbery with wounding and other offences.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Liverpool Local Court today (Monday 11 May 2020).
