Cancer Council WA and Reflections awards funding to Mesothelioma Cancer Research - Dr Chee and team Through the generous contributions of our community, Cancer Council WA and Reflections have donated $225,000 to support Dr Jonathan Chee’s Postdoctoral Fellowship – Cracking the code to successful cancer immunotherapy.

Cancer Council WA is proud to have awarded Dr Chee $75,000 a year for three years (from 2019 to 2021) in conjunction with Reflections, who contributed $30,000 to Dr Chee’s fellowship in 2019.

Dr Chee’s fellowship project aims to discover which types of mesothelioma patients might benefit from immunotherapy, and ways to predict and prevent any bad reactions to the treatment.

His study aims to map the changes that happen when immunotherapy is successful, and see if they can use this information to predict and improve the outcome of future treatment.

This is a very exciting project that could have great real world applications for mesothelioma sufferers, which currently has one of the lowest survival rates of all cancers.

In the first year, Dr Chee and his team have made some exciting progress. You can read about their achievements below:

  • About Dr Chee’s Research
  • Summary of Dr Chee’s year 1 achievements

Every year, Cancer Council WA awards one of these fellowships, with each fellowship running for approximately three years.

As the largest charitable funder of cancer research in Western Australia, it is critical that we use community donations in the most effective and efficient way possible when funding peer-reviewed world-class research that reduces the incidence and impact of cancer.
