A new-look Wyndham Park and major road and open space upgrades are among some of the highlights of Wyndham City’s 2019/20 capital works program, which has officially wrapped up.
Wyndham City Mayor Cr Josh Gilligan said Council’s 2019/20 capital works program delivered not only essential infrastructure projects such as road and park upgrades, but also a range of city-shaping projects that will contribute to the overall liveability of the City now and into the future.
“In the past year we’ve invested more than $106.3 million towards building the infrastructure our community needs for roads, community centres, sporting reserves, and more,” Cr Gilligan said.
“Even while we have all been in lockdown due to COVID-19 restrictions, Wyndham City has been on the move delivering these vital infrastructure projects that will make a positive difference to Wyndham’s future.”
“These include completing the $13 million redevelopment of Wyndham Park, which has transformed the park into a recreation and events space of regional significance.”
“Another major Wyndham City project was the mammoth $11 million redevelopment of Mossfiel Reserve, which features new sports fields for cricket and rugby, six netball courts, two community pavilions, a half-court basketball court and a playground.”
“We’ve also built the state-of-the-art Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre in Wyndham Vale and the $6.4 million Mainview Integrated Family Learning Centre in Truganina, which will give growing families in these areas access to maternal and child health services, support services and early childhood education.”
“Meanwhile, another 50 neighbourhood parks across the City have been upgraded in the past year through the Wyndham Parks 2021 project and we continue to improve pedestrian and bicycle access in and around the City to create a less car-dependent Wyndham.”
Cr Gilligan said road upgrades had also been a major focus of the 2019/20 capital works program.
“Reducing traffic congestion and improving the safety of our local roads is one of the most important issues facing our community,” Cr Gilligan said.
“That’s why we invested $4 million to widen and seal Hacketts Road, between Aviation Road and Tamworth Grove, in Point Cook, and spent a further $11 million to reconstruct and resurface local roads over the 2019/20 financial year.”
Cr Gilligan said Council was proud to have delivered such an extensive capital works program over the past year.
“By 2021 Wyndham’s population is forecast to surpass 300,000 people. That’s why it’s more important than ever that Council invests in the necessary infrastructure to service our growing community,” Cr Gilligan said.
“It’s also important to acknowledge and thank the State Government for their contribution towards our 2019/20 capital works program, allocating more than $14.265 million towards a number of these projects – including $3.2 million for the Wyndham Park redevelopment, $3.16 million towards the Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre and $2.4 million for the Mainview Integrated Family Learning Centre.”
