Car hits Light Rail Train, NSW

A driver will be issued with a Future Court Attendance Notice (FCAN) after a hatchback and a Light Rail Train collided in Surry Hills.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of South Dowling and Devonshire streets shortly before 5pm (Sunday 26 January 2020), after a southbound Honda Jazz allegedly ran a red light and struck the train, derailing it.

The hatchback driver, a 37-year-old man, and his wife who was the front-seat passenger, were not injured; however, the vehicle was extensively damaged. The driver of the Light Rail and seven passengers also escaped injury.

Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance paramedics and staff from the Transport Management Centre and Transport NSW attended.

All lanes in both southbound and northbound direction were closed for about 1.5 hours while the scene was examined and the vehicles removed.

The hatchback driver, from Paddington, will be issued with a FCAN for failing to stop at the red light.
