CCTV image released as fraud investigated in Redfern

Police have released a CCTV image of a man as part of investigations into alleged frauds in Sydney’s south late last year and early this year.

Between Monday 2 November 2020 and Thursday 21 January 2021, a 63-year-old Redfern man received a number of phone calls and text messages from someone representing themselves as police from China.

The man was told he had been implicated in a fraud in China and would be deported to China and jailed if he did not pay a substantial fine.

About 5pm on Thursday 21 January 2021, the Redfern man met with a man in Chippendale and handed over cash.

Police were notified of the fraudulent payment and officers from South Sydney Police Area Command commenced an investigation.

As part of their inquiries, detectives have released a CCTV image of a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He is depicted as being of Asian appearance, aged 30 to 40, with a medium build, and short black hair.
