Chadstone Hotel Coup Underscores Strength Of Suburbs

  • Minister for Suburban Development

Melbourne has bolstered its position as the nation’s capital for fashion, retail and luxury accommodation with the opening of Hotel Chadstone Melbourne - the first five-star hotel built outside the CBD.

Minister for Suburban Development Marlene Kairouz said the $130 million, 250-room hotel would attract more visitors to the state and drive jobs and investment in the inner south-east.

With more than 24 million people visiting Chadstone every year, including 500,000 from overseas, the shopping centre is one of Melbourne’s key attractions bringing together retail, entertainment, tourism, business and now accommodation.

Chadstone is a key jobs provider, creating employment for more than 6,000 full-time-equivalent workers, and has an annual turnover of more than $2 billion, making it the world’s fourth largest shopping centre by sales.

Over the past 60 years, Chadstone has transformed itself from a traditional retail precinct to a luxury lifestyle destination, demonstrating how revitalising our suburbs can attract investment, jobs and breathe new life into an established area.

The Victorian Budget 2019-20 invested $3.5 million to boost revitalisation projects in Melbourne’s established suburbs, to further enhance liveability, create jobs and drive a sustainable future.

As part of this work, the Andrews Labor Government is backing infrastructure and community projects under way in Frankston and Broadmeadows.

This will include plans for affordable housing, identifying space for government services and youth engagement programs, and supporting strong public transport connections.

As noted by Minister for Suburban Development Marlene Kairouz

“This is a $130 million vote of confidence in Melbourne and the inner south-east which will help further grow jobs and create opportunities for local people.”

“Across Melbourne, we’re getting on with making our suburbs even better places to live, work and play.”
