Changes to customer service arrangements at police stations

Tasmania Police is making changes to the opening of customer service areas at police stations.

“The health and wellbeing of our staff and the Tasmanian community is our highest priority,” said Acting Deputy Commissioner Jonathan Higgins.

“As a precaution against the spread of COVID-19, Tasmania Police is restricting public access to customer service areas of Police Stations,” he said.

“Police are operating from the stations as normal and service delivery to the Tasmanian community will continue but we need to reduce the risk to customers and staff at our stations.”

The changes include:

➢ Hobart and Launceston Station Customer Service Areas – opening hours to the public between 8am and 4pm;

➢ Burnie and Devonport Customer Service Areas – opening hours to the public between 9am and 4pm;

➢ All other Customer Service Areas – restricted entry during normal business hours, with public entrance doors closed.

“We have found that the number of people attending stations in person has already significantly reduced. Of course, people should not be leaving their homes unless it is essential,” said Acting Deputy Commissioner Higgins.

The change to customer service hours will also free up resources to provide policing services in the community.

Signs will be displayed at the front of stations which will explain closure and contact procedures for members of the public presenting at police stations.

Wherever possible members of the community can complete reports by telephone or online.

Bail reporting will continue with modifications to prevent person to person contact. For example, a person will be sighted, their identity confirmed and an appropriate recording process undertaken.
