Christina Matthews leaves WA Cricket with strong legacy

Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman today thanked departing WA Cricket Chief Executive Officer Christina Matthews for her four decades of participation and leadership in cricket.

Mr Templeman said the most capped female Test player was one of only two women in the world to hold the position of CEO of a first-class cricket association, and had marked her time in the role as a leader for players of all abilities and genders.

Ms Matthews began her career as a wicket keeper and right-handed batter, appearing in 20 Test matches and 47 One Day Internationals for Australia between 1984 and 1995 – including playing at the 1988 and 1993 World Cups.

Her time as CEO has seen WA Cricket enjoy a series of wins, including the Perth Scorchers and WA teams taking out 14 trophies during her tenure.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“I want to thank and acknowledge Christina for her stewardship over the past twelve years her leadership has seen cricket in Western Australia flourish and grow.

“She has shown extraordinary strength of character by standing up for the rights of others and improving inclusivity at WA Cricket.

“She has been an excellent and well-respected administrator and leader. Her successor will have big boots to fill.”
