Christmas show to light up St Joseph’s once again

Lights of Christmas

The spectacular Lights of Christmas show will once again see coloured lights playing across St Joseph’s Cathedral this year thanks in part to $15,000 contributed toward the event by Rockhampton Regional Council.

This is the third consecutive year the show will take place.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the display has quickly become an iconic part of Christmas celebrations in the Region.

“We first saw St Joseph’s Cathedral awash with colour for at Christmas in 2017 to delighted crowds,” said Mayor Strelow.

“And it wasn’t just the locals who thought the show was so impressive. It took out Showtex Australia’s Best Small Event Award.

“Last year more than 25,000 thousand people made the Lights of Christmas display a part of their festive season, so clearly word has gotten out!

“I’d like to thank the Lights of Christmas Committee and the Catholic Diocese for helping to make Rockhampton Region’s Christmas extra special. Council’s contribution is on behalf of a clearly supportive community.”

Rob Alexander, Lights of Christmas committee member, said they were exceptionally grateful for Council’s support in hosting the event.

“Council has been on board right from the start, and on behalf of the organising committee I would really like to thank them for their support,” said Mr Alexander.

“It really shows how much they believe this is a great community event that is worth supporting.

“I would like to encourage everyone in the community to come along and see the show.

“It’s a really joyous and family friendly event.

“It’s also very impressive to see a 21st century light show on the canvas of a beautiful 19th century façade!”

The Lights of Christmas show will take place from 17 to 23 December 2019.
