The second stage of a $1.9m the Churchill Park Sportsground Precinct redevelopment will get underway in early 2021 as part of the City of Launceston’s $40m Accelerated Capital Works Program.

The Accelerated Capital Works Program forms a key part of the Council’s Community Care and Recovery Package, developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new multi-purpose sports field will be constructed at the facility, along with the installation of two full-size soccer fields and a full-size cricket pitch and playing field.

The project will involve subsoil and landscaping works, the installation of new drainage systems, removal and replacement of selected trees, and the installation of new irrigation systems. The project forms part of the masterplan for the Churchill Park Sportsground Precinct and aims to revitalise and enhance the site.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the project represented a significant upgrade to one of Launceston’s most highly utilised sporting facilities.

“The Churchill Park Sportsground Precinct is used by thousands of Northern Tasmanians each week and this redevelopment will ensure the facility remains one of the region’s best,” Mayor van Zetten said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing work underway in coming weeks and we ask for people’s patience as we begin work on this exciting project.”
