City accelerates maintenance program

The City of Greater Geelong is bringing forward scheduled maintenance
and refurbishment projects on a range of community facilities across the
municipality.

Up to $1.3 million worth of works that were due to take place in the
2020-21 financial year will now be completed by the end of June.

The varied works – such as roof replacement, repainting and new carpet
– require the venues to be fully or partially closed.

The projects have been brought forward to enable them to be carried
out while the facilities have limited or reduced public use, due to thecoronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

The accelerated program will provide a welcome range of opportunities
for local contractors during an uncertain and challenging period.

It will also enable users and participants to enjoy upgraded
facilities when restrictions are lifted and avoid the need for a
maintenance-related closure in 2020-21.

Community halls, Maternal and Child Health centres, sports pavilions
and libraries are among the venues to be refurbished in coming weeks.

Projects include:

  • A repaint of the Waterworld pool;
  • A full repaint and new carpet in Newcomb
    Library;
  • Carpet replacement and resurfaced squash court
    floors in Corio Leisuretime Centre;
  • Roof replacement at the Highton Senior Citizen’s
    Centre;
  • Roof replacement at the vacant Drysdale
    Preschool; and
  • Roof replacement at Bellarine Aquatic &
    Sports Centre.

Bringing forward this scheduled program of works has a
number of benefits. It allows us to carry out needed maintenance with less
disturbance to users of the facilities and means the venues will be in better
condition when they return to full use.

Importantly, it will also stimulate economic activity
by providing work for local businesses and their employees. The Council is focused on driving the economic and
social recovery of the region as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, and
these works will play a role in that process.
