The City of Greater Geelong has been recognised for its use of smart technologies to make the region more resilient to climate change by making a national list for innovation.
Reaffirming our standing as industry leader, the City was the only local government authority across Australia and New Zealand to be recognised on the annual Australian Financial Review (AFR) BOSS Most Innovative Companies list at last night’s Sydney ceremony.
Heatwaves claim more lives than bushfires, cyclones, earthquakes, floods, and severe storms combined and adversely affect plants, animals, and water bodies. Guided by our Smart City Strategic Framework and the Climate Change Response Plan 2021-2030, the City has embraced world-class technologies and created initiatives to proactively respond to the impacts of climate change.
Via innovative solutions including weather sensors, digital twins, Artificial Intelligence (AI), custom-built marine furniture and digital wayfinding, the City is improving local climate risk knowledge and involving local communities through initiatives such as:
- The sculptural Dell Eco Reef in Clifton Springs, comprising 46 wave units, is reducing beach erosion and providing habitat for oysters and mussels, providing much-needed wave break protection and enhancing the beauty of the coast;
- The creation of a localised cooler microclimate in Eastern Park through smart irrigation, effectively safeguarding thousands of Grey-headed flying foxes who call it home over summer;
- The creation of the first Geelong Digital Twin, with high-fidelity building models and tree canopy coverage data to map urban heat, enabling pedestrians to choose cooler walking routes; and
- The installation of 18 new weather recording devices through the Weather Together Program, providing continuous data every 15 minutes to support agriculture and precision planning.

This recognition adds to the City of Greater Geelong’s other Smart City achievements, such as being named a Top7 Smart Community of 2023 this year by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF).
Last year, Geelong won the International Smart City of the Year award alongside Barcelona City at the World Smart City Expo.
