City of Ballarat applies for Heritage Victoria Permit

Public submissions are open for the City of Ballarat’s application for a Heritage Victoria (HV) permit for the portion of the Lake Wendouree Lighting Project covered by an Interim Protection Order (IPO).

The permit relates to the installation of approximately 181, 5m-high, LED Luminaire light poles approximately 25-30m apart along the Steve Moneghetti Track

A Notice for an IPO on the Lake Wendouree precinct was issued in March, meaning the lake lighting project in the portion of the lake covered by the IPO requires a HV Permit before commencement.

Prior to the IPO, the lighting project had received all legislative and statutory approvals including a Planning Permit issued by the City of Ballarat, Heritage Victoria Permit (for the botanical gardens precinct, which is already listed on the Victorian State Heritage Register), and a Cultural Heritage Management Plan from the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

The Lake Wendouree Lighting Project is jointly funded by the State Government ($2.5mil) and the City of Ballarat ($300,000).

The application for a HV permit for the remainder of the project will be advertised as per the Heritage Act 2017 for a total of 14 days from Wednesday 20 April, 2022 until Tuesday 3 May, 2022.

The application will be advertised in the form of signage across the Lake Wendouree precinct, as a one-off advertisement in The Courier newspaper on the first day of advertising, and on the Heritage Victoria website at https://www.heritage.vic.gov.au/permits/currently-advertised-permits.
