The City of Canada Bay will cut its carbon emissions by 1,000 tonnes and save close to a quarter of a million dollars in energy bills per year, thanks to its new streetlight improvement program.
The program is part of a wider project by the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils and has seen 2,304 old residential streetlights upgraded to LED alternatives to date.
“Our streetlight replacement program is a win for the environment and a win for local ratepayers too,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.
“Our streetlight replacement program is expected to save Council a further 1,000 tonnes in carbon emissions and $250,000 in energy costs a year.
“It’s all part of our strategy to use energy more efficiently and achieve net zero carbon emissions from Council operations by 2030.”
LED lamps not only use a fraction of the energy compared to older streetlights but are more cost effective, longer lasting, and easier to maintain.
The program is just the first step in the City of Canada Bay’s streetlight improvements, with Council looking to rollout further upgrades in the future.
