City of Casey welcomes Clyde Road Upgrade outcome

The City of Casey has welcomed the outcome of the Federal Government’s 90-day review of the Infrastructure Investment Program, which recommends the $250 million Clyde Road Upgrade be constructed.

It is proposed that the project, to be delivered by the Victorian Government, will include an additional lane in each direction from Princess Freeway to Kangan Drive and upgrades to the intersections at Kangan Drive and the freeway.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff PSM said Council welcomed the outcome of the review, which recommends the $250 million in Federal funding committed to the project be retained.

“The Clyde Road Corridor is one of the busiest and most congested arterial thoroughfares in the City of Casey, recording the highest number of congestion and safety related complaints from our community,” Ms Duff said.

“We therefore welcome the outcome of the review and look forward to the construction of the Clyde Road Upgrade to help ease congestion and improve safety and travel times for our community.”

Upgrade works are expected to include:

  • An additional lane in each direction from the Princes Freeway to Kangan Drive.
  • Widening of the existing bridge over the freeway and upgrading the freeway intersections.
  • Upgrades to the intersection of Clyde Road and Kangan Drive.
  • Improved shared user paths and new lighting, signage and landscaping.

Ms Duff said the City of Casey had been advocating for many years for the much-needed upgrade to the Clyde Road Corridor, which comprises Clyde Road, Berwick-Cranbourne Road and Clyde-Five Ways Road, as part of its Connecting Casey advocacy campaign. Council has been calling for the duplication of up to 14km of arterial road, new signalised and upgraded intersections as well as other upgrades to paths, crossings, public transport and traffic management measures.

“We are pleased that the Clyde Road Upgrade in Berwick is recommended to proceed and, once completed, will go some way towards easing traffic congestion and improving safety along this section of this busy arterial road.

“Clyde Road is a significant north-south arterial road corridor in Casey, providing a vital connection between Berwick, Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne East and Cranbourne. In the past 5 years, the population of Clyde and Clyde North has tripled, making it one of the fastest growing areas in Victoria. This rapid population growth is leading to record car ownership and increased pressure on Casey’s transport network.
